The length scale equation in turbulence models
The question of which length scale equation to use in models of turbulence has long been controversial and several approaches have been suggested and used in the past. In this paper, we demonstrate that all these approaches are equivalent and the inconsistencies in the use of some of these approaches arise from improper modeling of the diffusion term in the length scale equation. We formulate a...
متن کاملLadder Theorem and length-scale estimates for a Leray alpha model of turbulence
In this paper, we study the Modified Leray alpha model with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the regular solution verifies a sequence of energy inequalities that is called ”ladder inequalities”. Furthermore, we estimate some quantities of physical relevance in terms of the Reynolds number. MSC:76B03; 76F05; 76D05; 35Q30.
متن کاملEvaluation of a Buoyancy and Shear Based Mixing Length for a Turbulence Scheme
We present a new diagnostic mixing length for a turbulence scheme based on a prognostic equation for the turbulence kinetic energy. The formulation adds a local vertical wind shear term to the non-local buoyancy-based mixing length currently used in the research mesoscale model Meso-NH. The combined effects better represent local mixing for stably stratified flows where the wind shear plays a m...
متن کاملUniversality of small scale turbulence.
The proposed universality of small scale turbulence is investigated for a set of measurements in a cryogenic free jet with a variation of the Reynolds number (Re) from 8500 to 10(6) (max(R(lambda) approximately 1200). The traditional analysis of the statistics of velocity increments by means of structure functions or probability density functions is replaced by a new method which is based on th...
متن کاملScale resolved intermittency in turbulence
The deviations Scm (“intermittency corrections”) from classical (“K41”) scaling c,==m/3 of the mth moments ( 1 u(p) I”) in high Reynolds number turbulence are calculated, extending a method to approximately solve the Navier-Stokes equation described earlier. It is suggested to introduce the notion of scale resolved intermittency corrections Sk,(p), because these &L&(p) are found to be large in ...
